Dear George W Bush:
What about Martha Stewart? She got a 5-month sentence for lying to a federal official. This is fundamentally no different than what your pal Scooter was convicted of doing....
Why didn't you commute her sentence too--so that she did no time in jail?
And if indeed you thought Martha's sentence was fair, why didn't you just match Scooter's sentence to hers?

How's this for a rationale: Martha Stewart's lie was about reaping personal gain from insider market information. Scooter Libby's was motivated by loyalty to his mentors in Government. Government is not the solution, Government is the Problem. It is largely irrelevant in American society.
Personal gain in our market economy on the other hand is the Golden Fleece of the American Dream realized. Seeking it any way one can is virtue in its purest form. Now, that said, getting caught in a lie about how one is seeking that gain ranks among the most noxious of sins, and therefore merits an appropriate period of time in stir, to contemplate one's stupidity in being caught, and to calculate a way wherein, next time, one will be clever enough to escape detection.
